Robben Island

Robben Island is off the coast of Cape Town and about a 45minute ferry ride. This island started out as a Leper colony was then a military base and last use was the most famous because it was used as a prison to house prisoners that opposed appartheid including Nelson Mandela. Mandela spent 17 years in a small cell with only a bucket for a toilet. Guides for the tours are former inmates themselves so they a true feeling of what it was like during those times.
